Never to old, or young, to learn

Here is a link (mash here) to a great 4 part series on Hydration during exercise. The majority of the article deals with endurance athletes. The article, however, is useful towards any person in athletic endeavors.
Joe Friel is a long respected coach of triathletes and has a vast amount of knowledge in regards to health, hydration, and nutrition for athletes.

Also, many studies have shown that consuming chocolate milk after workouts helps to speed the bodies recovery time. This basically means that chugging some brown cow after a swim workout will help you swim hard again the next day. 2 cheers for the brown cow. Check out just one of the many articles.

Drills Drills Drills

Not many people enjoy swim drills. Everyone simply wants to "go faster". The problem, however, is not desire but rather technique.
Check out this great article to encourage you during the next drill set. Mash here

Learn to imprint perfect technique!

Great quote from the article :" Average performers tend to feel they’re getting the job done if they simply grind out long sets of freestyle repeats. But too often that just means the same freestyle stroke imprinted thousands of times. Expert performers tirelessly experiment or refine with every drive, swing or stroke"

WOW

Wow, does anyone want to work on finishing strong this week in the pool!!!!
Phelps brings home the Gold, and forever reminds us to push hard THRU the wall not TO the Wall.

SWIM Stroke Clinic

The Montgomery Y Barracudas will be hosting a Stroke Clinic on August18-21 from 5 to 6PM at the EAST YMCA on Pelzer Avenue.
The Cost will be $40.00 per swimmer.  This will be an outstanding time of instruction for your swimmer as well as a tryout for those considering the Barracuda program.

I met with Coach Paul this week and I will begin helping with the Barracuda swim team as an assistant coach.  I am excited to be working with Coach Paul and the Barracudas.  Hopefully we will have some sharks in the water this year too!

Thanks again for the incredible show of support you all gave to Ann and me this year.
I am enjoying the gift cards and the influx of caffeine from Starbucks is always fun!!!
Hope to see all of you back next summer as the Sharks will try to become faster and faster (and have some fun too)!

Favorite Sunscreen

I have been asked several times this summer to recommend a good sunscreen for swimmers.
I really like KINeSYS performance sunscreen. It goes on dry and stays on throughout swimming and sweating. I came across this product during the Ironman triathlon and it works great. Used it on my kids at the Sprint meet Saturday and no one got burned. Yippeeee.
Here is a link and unfortunately I don't get paid by the endorsement.

Great product.

Practice MONDAY and TUESDAY ONLY this week. HAPPY 4th of JULY

Wynlakes meet

Great job sharks. We had wonderful weather (not too hot), good food, and great cheering from the fans. The sharks swam hard and fast Thursday night. Good job everyone!

Quick word of thank you to Mr. Richard Patino (Perry and Ashley's dad) for coming to practice this week to share his insights and experiences of swimming. Mr. Patino was an All-American swimmer for the University of Alabama and swam in the Olympics for Columbia! Mr. Patino encouraged the kids to give their all in swimming as well as in life. He gave the swimmers some wonderful tips and great words of wisdom. Who knows, Mr. Patino might have inspired some future Olympians! Thanks again for taking time to be with us.

Great 1st meet

Results from the meet-mash here

Great job Sharks. We had a fun first meet last night at the SEY, and thankfully we avoided the rain.

Everyone did a fantastic job and we have a strong foundation to build upon the rest of the summer. We will have ribbons on Monday at practice and after practice we will go celebrate at MOE's.

Thanks to all the parents who helped with timing, clerk of course, officiating, and cheering. The new Shark shirt and SEY Shark banners made for a great environment at the first meet of the summer.

Thanks again for a great meet and I look forward to seeing everyone on Monday.

Basically Basic

Our first few practices have been 'basically basic'. We are trying to build a solid foundation for our swimmers to use all summer long. We have worked on proper breathing technique -breathing out UNDER the water and breathing IN out of the water (basic concepts that the lungs seem to enjoy). Our goal is to breath "low" with one eye still in the water as we look towards the lane line for breath and not the sky.

We have also worked on finding a good balance in the water and remaining "quiet" as we swim in order to not beat the water.

The sharks learned that Tiger Woods often practices drills for up to 14 hours in one day, and that to be a better swimmer we must drill even the smallest aspects of the swim stroke. So that is why we have started the week 'basically basic'.

All the sharks are giving great effort and you should be proud of your swimmer. Please encourage your shark to bring a water bottle or gatorade, goggles, towel, and a desire to work hard every day. We are trying to instill an old life lesson that "you can't hold a trophy without blisters on your hands". In other words- the rewards of hard work will pay off one day!

Thanks again for swimming with the Sharks this summer.

See you at the Pool.

Great 1st day

Thanks to all who were able to make the evaluation/parent meeting. We had a good turnout and answered a good number of questions. Parents please feel free to call if you have any remaining questions.

We welcome all the new swimmers to the team and are excited about you being with us! We were also glad to see some familiar faces and can't wait to get things started.

Swimmers - our first practice will be next Tuesday!!!! Take some time this week and get in the water and start getting those muscles loose and limber for the upcoming season.

Practice Tuesday May 27th. 8 and Under 4:15 to 5:00 p.m. 9 and up 4:30 to 5:30. Please arrive 15 minutes early for warmup.

Don't forget - Goggles, towel, water bottle/sports drink, and a great attitude!!

Can't wait for a great season.

Go Sharks.

4 months until Swim season

Alright Sharks swim season is only 4 months away!!! If you are playing Soccer -great - the running will help prepare you for a great season. If you are playing baseball/softball - good - but you may need to add some extra running before or after practice to get your body up to speed before we start those famous sprint sessions!

Have a great winter sports season, and we will see you soon.

The Bell Road Y is a great place to get in some laps before our pool opens up. If anyone is interested in a group workout just let me know and we can get something together.

Swim hard.
Coach Troy
